O Jesus, You are first and last
With no beginning and no end;
From You we understand our past
And that we can begin again.
The likeness of our Adam First
We bear in body and in soul,
An image makes us for You thirst
And long for You to make us whole.
For we in Eve and Adam fell
And lost what we had first been giv’n
And know within the fires of Hell
Our tarnished image must be shriv’n.
And now You come as Adam born,
Yet not from dust but Virgin’s womb;
Unite what we apart had torn
When You rise from an earthly tomb.
In image of You we’re reborn
With body, soul together knit;
No longer are we here forlorn—
Now know we are for heaven fit.
Our unity we know within
Will not be lost when we are raised,
For Resurrection frees from sin:
With soul and body we are saved.
