We have a teacher deep within
Is breathed in us when first conceived
In clay His Image we receive;
Our human life from Him begins.
Our persons to His Persons cleave,
No barrier is there between;
His light an everlasting beam
Draws hearts to constantly believe.
Cast down, our enemy descends
To crawl upon the earth below,
Beguiles our clay, to him bestow
Allegiance ours, we fall in sin.
Preveniently to Anna’s womb
Blows Spirit from Gethsemane,
Brings Nature pure from Calvary
Through Joachim’s seed to Eden’s gloom.
Then in our clay to Mary comes
Our Father’s Son, her Nature takes,
With His divine One Person makes,
That we like Him can now become.
His mother’s Image pure unites
Obediently with Him above
To draw us back to Triune Love
As come we to Him, hearts contrite.
Our curse of death on Cross He bears
As journey we with Him through grave.
His Image deep within He saves;
Leaves in His tomb our sin He snares.
Now, breath that raised Him from the dead
Is breathed in us to Image wake,
And body new He for us makes–
On Him forever will be fed.
