Sunlight Through His Rain

I’m living in a salty waste
That’s seasoned by my own desires.
My pleasures now have lost their taste;
I’m burning from my own sin’s fire.

Please come, O Lord, desires destroy
And irrigate my thirsty heart;
To cleanse me now Your Cross employ
And make me clean, give me new start.

Now my parched soul can feel Your rain
That comes on Holy Spirit’s breath;
It’s sent by You to ease my pain
And save me from my sin and death.

I feel in me Your virtues sprout,
Long dormant in my image made;
In me they sinful vices route–
Bring sunshine to my years-long shade.

O Lord, help me to follow light
From heaven comes on Spirit’s beam
As Father gives me risen life
From You, who my life has made clean.

Eternal Now

Let us not saddened be by things of time
But live in truth of Your eternal now
Where sense is found in all of heaven’s rhyme
And You with meaning all our lives endow.

May we surrender to Your truth revealed
In Jesus by Your Holy Trinity
Who our salvation with His Blood has sealed
As in our lives unfolds who we’re to be.

In heaven there awaits for each a place
We learn to fill here in time’s rolling tide,
For Resurrection makes for us a space
Both here and there–with families we’ll abide.

The tide of time alone won’t have its way;
Eternal now will have the final say.

Rooms With Open Doors

O Lord, You’ve broken down my walls,
     My fortress is no more;
In desperation now I call:
     “Please save me!” I implore.

Then He steps through my open door
     I can no longer shut
And meets me in my spirit poor;
     My pride no longer struts.

Learn metaethics always fails—
     Autonomy my sin—
Desires of mine became my jail;
     Please make me free again.

Then Spirit He within me breathes,
     And I forgiveness know
As I fall down upon my knees–
     New life in me bestowed.

At last my heart can clearly see
     All Jerichos are doomed,
And in His castle there will be
     For each of us a room.

There all the rooms have open doors
     So He can come and go
With others who have spirits poor–
     Together love Him so.

Your Path Is Love

Your love, O Lord, is all I need
     To see me through this day
Or else I’ll be a shaken reed
     And won’t be on Your way.

Without You path is slippery slope,
     My feet no traction gain,
And fast recedes my only hope
     To flee from my sin’s pain.

But with Your love I rise above
     The mess that I have made,
And upward walk with Spirit’s Dove
To light beyond sin’s shade

Your love I see when I look up
To gaze on Trinity
And know both there and here I’ll sup
On feast that makes me free.

Your love comes now in Body, Blood,
     Unites Your heaven, earth,
For as a Man You with us stood
     To give to us new birth.

And each new person walks with You
     Who heaven, earth connect,
For in them both Your love we view–
     Await what happens next.

Your Watch Fire

I see the watch fire of Your camp
     When I step in Your nave–
A beacon that’s Your signal lamp
     That You are here to save.

I walk the aisle and genuflect
     And settle in my pew;
I take a moment to reflect
     On You who make life new.

In every Catholic Church You’re here
     To save us from ourselves–
From selfishness that brings us near
     To Satan to earth fell.

Your watch fire is Your beacon’s call
     To come, take Your light yoke,
And not to let Old Adam’s fall
     Mute words on earth You spoke.

For every day You to us come
     To speak Your words again,
To give vocation to become
     Ourselves who’re free from sin.

And in this Church You give us You,
     Your Body and Your Blood–
Make each vocation ever new
     As Your life in us floods.

His Garden Fair

Today we step into a place
     That our hands haven’t made,
An everlasting holy space
     Where Truth on altar laid.

For Jesus is God’s way and life
     Found in His Body, Blood;
With Mary, knows His Cross brings light.
     We stand where she has stood.

For Cross allows Him to be raised
     And conquer death for us,
A beacon meant to our world save,
     Breathe life into our dust.

For Spirit brings His Cross to each
     To death submit with Him–
Brings us within His risen reach
     And leaves in grave our sin.

His Spirit’s breath is heaven’s air
     That we can breathe on earth,
And we can smell His garden fair
     As earth knows its new birth.
